Here is my brief review of Onur Tukel's excellent comedy-drama Abby Singer/Songwriter. It's a comedy about a talented but broke filmmaker trying to make it in NYC and a talented musician trying to make a comeback while managing a banking type career and family life.

The movie is well made, and funny from the start to end. Tukel is known for making dark, sarcastic movies - this one is not really one of those movies. It starts out as something that is similar to perhaps Curb Your Enthusiasm. Then it goes into the world of making music videos for a musician who is trying to make a comeback with a new album. The stresses of both trying to "make it" in NYC in film and in music is reflected in the movie.

Great cinematography - several different styles are used. Great ending. The film reflects several different filmmaking styles and looks at times - from American indies that uses HD video to a 35MM film type look that can be seen in Godard's Goodbye to Language. The ending is excellent (it is probably the 2nd thing that reminded me of Godard).

I don't think the movie was properly viewed, reviewed, and promoted, discussed, described when it first came out. Tukel is obviously a very talented and capable director, writer, actor. Check out the movie here for FREE at the moment:

8½ cool things about Dan Mirvish's fantastic new film 18½

By Sujewa Ekanayake (Dan Mirvish is a fellow indie filmmaker, and I donated a tiny amount of $s to his new project ' 18½' - but - these are my otherwise unbiased notes on the new movie (if I don't like an indie movie I don't write about it).) 1 - Wild, unpredictable story - I thought I was in for a light comedy about 1970s political matters - but no - the film takes a turn to Tarantino territory towards the end - but not as bloody - completely unpredictable. 2 - "the yeast of the proletariat" line :) 3 - '70s swingers 4 - The cinematography - film looks great, has a 1970s visual quality to it. 5 - The actors - all the actors do a great job. 6 - 2:35:1 aspect ratio - it's the best 7 - Making a movie of any kind is not easy.  Making a movie during a global pandemic is nearly an impossible thing to do.  But Dan and his team pulled it off - amazing. 8 - The film will become a cult classic.  It will have to be seen more than 2 or 3 times in order to fully ...
